The Ultimate Guide to Taco Tuesday

Spread the love

Welcome to the Ultimate Guide to Taco Tuesday! We’re making all your meal-planning dreams come true. This is a comprehensive look at all the taco roundups we’ve posted in the past two months (with some fresh ideas.) AKA the best of the best Taco Tuesday recipes ever.

If you’re just joining the party, we’ve chosen to focus specifically on taco recipes because we routinely pencil in a Taco Tuesday to our meal plans. (Not EVERY Tuesday, but it really simplifies the meal-planning process.) If you’ve checked out any the the free meal plans we offer at Fourganic Sisters, the love for Taco Tuesday is strong. (If you’re into theme-night meal planning, we’ve got a great list of dinner ideas for that in this post.)

Sometimes, we stick with a classic ground beef recipe mixed with black beans, salsa, cheese and shredded lettuce. Then, just stuff it into a hard or soft shell and it’s go time. We do like to change it up though. Jodi’s family loves fusion-style taco recipes and nachos. Fish tacos are especially popular with all of our families.

No matter the protein source of the tacos, a few key details remain consistent. We want the tacos to be as healthy as possible and packed full of veggies. We also want to them to be affordable. You can find out more about how we eat healthy on a budget in this post. (Our budget for a family of five is $100-$115/week.)

DIY Taco Seasoning

One way to keep things frugal AND healthy is to make your own taco seasoning. I’ve only bought the packs of taco seasoning a handful of times, and I’ve always regretted it. I can’t get enough water for hours after eating all the extra sodium and unnecessary ingredients. Plus, even though they’re like a buck a pack, you can make your own with organic spices for a fraction of the price. Aldi and Walmart both carry organic spices for less than $2.00 a jar. I keep all my spices in half-pint-sized mason jars for easy scooping, so when I make a batch of taco seasoning, I just add the spices to a little mason jar and mix. Just make sure to store it in an airtight container.

Here’s the combo I use:

  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of ground turmeric
  • 3/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • optional: a pinch of cayenne for some extra heat

Make Your Own Tortillas

It’s been really easy to find organic crunchy taco shells in the past several years. Kroger and Trader Joe’s carry them for about $2.00/box. If we’re shopping at Aldi or Walmart, we’ll typically just buy organic tortilla chips to use in taco bowls or as toppings. Walmart sells organic blue corn tortilla chips for $1.28/bag!

Soft tortillas are more difficult to find organic. Kroger does carry a few varieties, but none of them taste that great, in my opinion. I do like the Ezekiel brand Food for Life corn tortillas (they come frozen). Trader Joe’s has handmade tortillas that, while not organic, are the closest to scratch made you can get. We always stock up when we visit Jodi near Cincinnati. Jodi, Ali, Lindsey are all actually great at making their own tortillas.
